'Alleviating Poverty' in Colombia
This is a fundraising initiative to help some of the families most affected by a recent tragedy in Colombia and to address the severe economic downturn that some of the poorest families are experiencing due to the Covid-19 pandemic.
Just recently, adjacent to our ‘Pueblo Viejo’ project, a terrible tragedy occurred. A petrol tanker came off the road and was leaking its cargo. Many local residents saw this as an opportunity to siphon the petrol. Whilst doing so, someone decided to steal the battery from the vehicle.
The spark from the removal of the battery caused a terrible explosion that resulted in 44 deaths, many severe injuries, burns, and lifelong scars.
We are currently dealing with the aftermath. Thus far, we’ve been able to help 55 of the families most affected by the tragedy, and we want to extend that number exponentially.
It’s rare we draw attention to specific happenings here in Colombia – but on this occasion we believe the severity of the tragedy warrants it.
We have set up a fund to address the tragedy and are looking for donations. If you feel you can help, please donate.
At the same time, it would appear that South America is now the epicenter of the Covid-19 virus with many hundreds of cases being reported on a daily basis here in Colombia.
This has caused the government to implement stringent measures to help safeguard the well-being of the people. These restrictions have most affected those who live in poverty. There are now thousands of people who have no way of sustaining themselves.
From the fundraiser ‘Alleviating Poverty’ all funds raised will be used for feeding the poor and providing medical assistance.
